Can you self -manage diabetes?

fer's profile photo   01/19/2023 5:39 p.m.

Abbott and Novo Nordisk have allied to improve adhereics and monitoring of treatments for people with diabetes.Companies have presented two technologies integrated into the same 'app'.

In this way, the Abbott glucose monitoring system and the 'intelligent' insulin pen of Novo Nordisk send their data to a record that automatically allows the patient, that the patient can have a monitoring of his insulin administrationsimple.

Juan Francisco Perán, president of the Spanish Diabetes Federation (Fede), explained that this 'duo' of devices will cover a need that is not covered right now for diabetes patients.

"It will allow to self -manage the disease to each patient and will also improve management for their relatives," he explained. In addition, he stressed that the devices, thanks to their format, are suitable for all ages.

Javier Ampudia, a specialist in endocrinology and nutrition at the University Hospital of Valencia, explained that, in diabetes patients, glycemic control "is very important, since bad control is associated with greater chronic complications."

In addition, he has valued the role of Spain in glycemic control and has assured that the situation of the country "is better than in the United Kingdom or Germany, for example."

"We have improved the care of patients, the quality of insulins and the administration of these. We have good drugs, a national health system (SNS) and technological advances," he summarized.

innovation in diabetes

Focused on the operation of the two devices, José María Barranco, director of access to the market and sales of Abbott in Spain, explained that his company is responsible for the sensor.

"It is very simple to use, it lasts 14 days, and the data to the 'app' goes directly; it replaces the puncture on the finger," he explained. Thus, he commented that the sensor is integrated with the Novo Nordisk device and achieves a result "that 10 years ago was imposing and now puts a grain of sand in the improvement of expectations."

"I don't know if we will reach the cure of diabetes, but hopefully improve the control and quality of life of patients so that they do not feel they have diabetes."

"The goal is to make patients feel that they have diabetes"

For his part, Francisco Pajuelo, medical director of Novo Nordisk, explained the operation of his 'smart pen', which allows an easy administration of insulin. He commented that around 5000 people in Spain already have the device, which is funded by the SNS and that the operation of each device is secured five years.

"This collaboration with Abbott makes us put the patient in the center and in the long term it will help us improve complications; we are addressing the leg that remained with respect to when the pharmacological treatment is managed."

"It gives peace of mind to the patient, to the relatives and gives a complete vision to the health personnel so that the therapeutic determination that the most helps the patient can make," he concluded.

Regardless of financing ... Is it really possible to "self -manage" diabetes only with pen and MCG?

I was surprised by the message, it seems more a sensational owner than a reality ... I don't know, what do you think?

I think we already self -manage diabetes. We measure the glucose, calculate the HC rations that we are going to eat, we decided how quickly insulin put ourselves to face each meal, we correct if we are high, let's complement if we are low.We decided how much slow we put in function of fasting glycemia. All of that is self -management.
The article speaks rather "-Automatization".The pen would ask me for kings because I am very clueless (I think I have some attention deficit) and, as I do not immediately point in the app the dose that I have put on, after a while I do not know if I have put 1, 1, 1, 5 or 2, or I haven't put on anything because the pot has gone. That pen would transfer the data automatically to the app, I would be great.
It's about having what they now call "data quality."It gives me a lot of anger when I download the freeview report and is full of holes in the basal doses or in the rations of the meals. So you cannot draw conclusions and improve treatment.

Totally @ENSALADA
If it is not self -management, you will tell me ...
We decided what we eat, what do we click, when, how much ...
The thread title was already weird "Can you self -manage diabetes?"
Well, if you can't take it clear ...

I do not understand anything, if we already self -management, it is a milonga that, you have to put the insulin based on blood glucose and then what you are going to eat that the pen does not know for many data that the sensor passes to the sensorpen, on topI have found a cure, or at least one insulin that is really effective controlling glucose, I still think that we do not know the truth of why there is no cure

The self -management, as you say, would go through the simile to artificial pancreas that some are trying with more sensors and so that it has an algorithm of self -control but that at the moment passes because the bomb user is programmed.
The bolí only records bowling in the ABBOTT application, as I do not use it.I do not need to register my data, for what?If I have to correct correct and if I have passed, I take glucose.
If in the future an algorithm will be created that learns from my guidelines and behavior, perhaps it would be interestingthat varies for many reasons.

Well. The feathers are going to evolve to give more information, whether it has been put or not, the advised dose, etc.
They will come very well so as not to be wrong with dose or insulin.
One more, but important help.

If it is in the S.S.I have it guided and it is great, it also allows you to put half units, the pen lasts for two years and you pass the data and automatic form.A paste, the first dose of the purge also happens to you, eye

The "self -managed", like "smart feathers", is pure marketing and nothing else.
As for the electronic feather of Novo Nordisk I have used something for a few weeks, but I don't see great advantages (at least for me).And yes some inconveniences: 1) is longer than disposable feathers and, therefore, more complicated to carry it in bags/pockets and less discreet;2) Being a single pen forces it to always take it on top and does not allow others available to be used in places where you spend a lot of time (workplace, second home, etc);3) The dosage by means units complicates me a lot to know the dose that I put only with listening to the clicks of the dosing, because with this pen they double;and 4) does not emit sound or 'clicks' by injecting insulin, making it harder to intuit if it has gone well or has been all.
But, of course, everyone's experience can be very different and decide its use as well.

Well, I am delighted, a very practical stuchy comes where you can put more feathers, glucose pills, more ecological, you can adjust with 1/2UDs, you can check the units you have put on and see the time that subtracts you from when you put it.Anyway, I do not see anything negative ... it is aluminum, you just have to be careful when changing the replacement (which is glass), but once inside if it falls, there is no problem, it endures.

The truth is that I do not have it connected to any application, it gave it free at the Vall Hebron hospital my educator to better adjust with the 1/2 units.I have prescribed both the pen and the glass replacement, as you can see in the photo (I always carry one of each). The other day I poured it and as they were talking to me I click me without checking the units (I had lasted more than more), thanks to the indication, I looked quickly and I could avoid a substitute taking half a ration of ch.I find it softer to inject than the other, which sometimes you have to tighten with more pressure and several times to empty."Click" does.Anyway, I am happy with her and if I spoiled me and they do not finance her I would not hesitate to buy me another.
