About fifty professionals from different specialties have participated today in Palma in the II Multidisciplinary Meeting on the Diabetic Foot, organized by the Son Espase Hospital Angiology and Surgery Service.
10 % of patients with diabetes have feet injuries or ulcers, which is called "diabetic foot", the health service of the Balearic Islands stands out.
Every year, the Son Espases hospital attends about fifty surgical emergencies for this problem, which can end mostly with the amputation of a lower limb or both.
The objective of the day is to update concepts about the infectious and vascular pathology of the patient with a diabetic foot and the early treatment of these complications.
The diabetic foot refers to ulcerations or destruction of deep tissues related to neurological alterations and different degrees of peripheral vascular disease in the lower extremities, which is often complicated with an infection.This infection and associated circulatory problems are a very serious complication that can end in amputation.
Feet infections can be caused by contamination of wounds, calluses, dry leather or poorly cut nails.
To prevent the appearance of the pathology of the diabetic foot, it is very important to check your feet periodically, take care of hygiene, wear comfortable footwear, avoid sedentary lifestyle, maintain adequate food and visit the doctor in case of infection.
