Medicus Mundi asks, on the eve of the International Health Day, dedicated this year to diabetes, the strengthening of public health systems.

Taking into account that this year the World Health Organization (WHO) dedicates health day, which is celebrated this Thursday, April 7, to diabetes, Medicus Mundi proposes the strengthening of public health systems and carePrimary as the best measure to reduce the problems that this disease still generates in many parts of the planet.

“Given this situation, in Medicus Mundi we defend that strengthening public health systems and in particular the new primary health-appoHealth problems in any country, ”he says.

Fernando Ignacio Carbone, which belongs to Medicusmundi in Peru and is a surgeon and was vice-minister of health, in addition to a member of the Ethics Commission of the Medical College of Peru.

And, Carbone explains, like other chronic and degenerative diseases, diabetes and their sequelae of all kinds "are a misfortune that catastrophically affects poor and excluded populations."

"Early diagnosis and disciplined treatment are fundamental to prevent serious complications such as blindness, renal failure, lower member amputation or myocardial infarction, but this is not easy when health systems are weak," he continues.

In rural areas with indigenous populations, adds the specialist, the incidence of these diseases is more "silent";It is not usually paid preventive attention to these health problems, there are less possibilities for early diagnosis and timely treatment and, therefore, greater risk of disability, dependence and premature death.

Finally, remember that habits such as healthy diet, physical activity, maintenance of normal body weight or avoiding tobacco consumption can prevent diabetes or delay their appearance.

"In addition, a strong and accessible health system is needed to the entire population for diagnosis and control of diabetes," he adds.
