The San Agustín hospital yesterday celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Unit.For this, those responsible for the unit organized a round table that was attended by Dr. José Carlos Hernando, promoter of this unit in the year 95;Dr. José Ignacio Suárez Tomas;Isolina Riaño Galán, Head of Service of the Unit;and Professor Serafín Málaga Guerrero, president of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics.
The unit serves patients from all parts of Asturias, not only from the health area III.In 2014 the number of patients amounted to 2,200 people with endocrinological problems.These are problems of growth, obesity, late or later development, hypercholylem and diabetes problems.
Riaño highlighted the importance of the nurses team when treating diabetes.Because "they offer a diabetological education that is fundamental for disease management, mainly aimed at parents."
He also wanted to value the new technologies that have been developed in this area such as insulin bombs, continuous infusion systems that improve the quality of life of children and their families in an important way.Riaño also explained that "the coordination between all the actors is necessary, as well as the training workshops for professionals and educational workshops in schools that facilitate support and sensitize society."
For the expert, one of the biggest endocrinological problems is the obesity that must be «treated from the prenatal stage.Then, one of the most important points is to promote that they are fed with breast milk during the first six months, that first stage of breastfeeding prevents many diseases ».
For his part, Dr. José Carlos Hernando recalled the beginnings of this unit, which he led for ten years.Professor Malaga highlighted the importance of specific areas such as the one that covers this unit.
