It has not yet been possible to stop the high prevalence of diabetes that, in Spain, already touches the 6 million people. It is a figure that, far from decreasing or stagnating, continues to grow vertiginously.

In this sense, the latest estimates that have been made since Fede suggests that within ten years the incidence of pathology could be increased by 55%, which would mean that more than 9 million Spaniards suffer from diabetes.

From Fede it is considered that the only way to stop this pandemic is to bet on education, training and information not only for people with diabetes but for society in general.

To achieve this, it is essential that all the agents involved, that is, public administration, health personnel, associations and people with diabetes, work coordination.

“We cannot continue with a system focused on acute patients, when chronicles represent 80% of consultations in primary care services. In addition, we must not forget that life expectancy is more and more lengthened, and people with some chronic ailment will increase significantly, ”says Andoni Lorenzo, president of the Federation.

In this sense, one of the main axes of work has been the claim of the therapeutic specialty in diabetes, a proposal that, from Fede, moved to the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, being key to improving the patient's self -care.

Fruit of this was precisely the publication of Royal Decree 639/2015, of July 10, which regulates the Diplomas of Accreditation and the Advanced Accreditation diplomas.

Firmly working to include health personnel in the classrooms to serve minors with this pathology, as well as for the fight against labor discrimination, urging the political class to bet on its regulation.
