Minors with diabetes in the summer camp held this August at the Farja School Round within the PineDas place, in La Carlota.

From August 8 to 14, in the Cordoba town of La CarlotHealth professionals from the south of Córdoba and Cádiz, specifically Begoña Sánchez Lechuga, resident of Endrocrinology and Nutrition at the Puerta del Mar de Cádiz Hospital, and Rosario Pérez Torres, nurse of the Pediatrics Clinical Management Unit of the Infanta Margarita Hospital, in Cabra.

It is an activity organized by the Federation of Diabetics Associations of Córdoba (Fadico) with the collaboration of the Association of Diabetics of the South of Córdoba (ADISURC), the Federation of Diabetics Associations of Andalusia (Fada) and the Junta de Andalucía.

The purpose is that minors who come to this camp receive information about the medication they must take, what kind of food is the most appropriate for them, advice on physical activities and standards to function in special situations or live together outside their home, to theThe same time that they carry out leisure activities and abroad, in full contact with nature, in a rural environment such as the Round Fuente School farm, located in the Cordoba Place of Las Pinedas, in La Carlota.

One of the essential figures in these camps is that of the monitor with diabetes. They are teenagers who collaborate in their free time in the training and care of these minors. This structure allows motivation in this age group that has solidarity much more developed than self -care and that through their participation in the formation of participating children, manage to advance in the coping of their diabetes.

This camp constitutes one of the multiple initiatives included in the Comprehensive Diabetes Plan of Andalusia. The fundamental objectives of this strategy are to reduce the incidence and impact of diabetes in the community, raise the quality of life of those affected, adapt the offer of services to the needs of the population and increase the degree of knowledge and information of thepopulation about diabetes.

In this sense, it is worth highlighting the role played by the associations of patients with diabetes, contributing to raise awareness about this disease. Also, sharing experiences, minors learn to see diabetes as a more normalized pathology, with which many other children live together, while learning to be more independent and self -sufficient when it comes to keeping diabetes controlled.

New Plan

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that appears when blood glucose levels are high as a result of problems in the production or functioning of insulin, necessary to metabolize glucose.

The prevalence rate of diabetes in Andalusia is currently estimated at 15.3% of the adult population, almost a million people.A total of 625,000 are patients who already have diagnosis, treatment and monitoring.Another 15.8% has alterations in blood glucose levels that represent high risk of developing type 2 of this chronic disease, the most frequent among adults.

The recent evaluation of the Diabetes Plan carried out by the Ministry of Health, has allowed not only to know data and indicators of evolution but also design and incorporate strategic lines of the new Comprehensive Plan, which will see the light throughout this year.

This plan will be aimed at improving, in the coming years, through mainly preventive actions,Health and quality of life of the Andalusians affected by this disease, as well as to minimize their complications.

Its writing is being reinforced thanks to the participation and collaboration of the Federation of Diabetes Patients and the different working groups when offering a proposal to improve and definition of objectives of the comprehensive plans, which results in the benefit of the groupof patients with diabetes of Andalusia.
