Educational workshops aimed at patients with diabetes (Elche)

The Endocrinology and Nutrition Service of the General University Hospital of Elche takes up the group education sessions for patients with diabetes next March.This initiative is intended for patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes, with intensive insulin treatment, as well as their relatives.

From the Hospital Diabetes Unit, organizer of the sessions, they explained that "we understand that group education is a fundamental complement to the patient together with the individualized education that we have been working day by day in the consultations."

For this reason, this year as novelty the sessions will have the participation of the medical specialists of the service so that a comprehensive approach to the pathology and a better resolution of the problem arising during the disease are provided.

The objective of the sessions is to provide knowledge and tools that facilitate the patient of self -control of their disease, and that, in addition, patients interact and share experiences and knowledge about the management of pathology.

Type 1 diabetes is characterized by the absence of insulin synthesis, the origin of this type of diabetes is not clear but everything suggests that it could have immune origin, differs from type 2 diabetes in which the latter has its origin inThe inability of the body to effectively use insulin, which is often a consequence of excess weight or physical inactivity.

The group education format consists of 6 theoretical-practical sessions in which different aspects of diabetes are treated.The training is taught on Saturday mornings from 10.30 to 12 hours to facilitate assistance.

The groups are composed of about 25 people that include family members because professionals understand that the family must be involved and well informed about the characteristics of a chronic disease such as diabetes.
