And it is that on paper the cure of diabetes seems to be close.Transplanting people with diabetes (and do not have a sufficient mass of beta cells to maintain adequate blood glucose levels), healthy cells that produce and release insulin (from stem cells), it is a theory that researchers have tested that it works, thanks to the transplantation of pancreatic islets from cadaveric donors.The objective, now, is to look for a source of cells from which insulin secretory cells can be obtained in sufficient amounts, so that cell therapy can be a reality applicable to people with diabetes.
In fact, this is the objective of the last clinical trial that seeks to apply knowledge about stem cells to the cure of diabetes, and which will be presented by Franz Martín, coordinator of the Cyberdem Research Program 2 and Professor of Nutrition and Bromatology of thePablo Olavide University of Seville, in the 4th edition of Diabetes Experience Day."The idea is to transplant people with cell diabetes that produce insulin and protect them from the attack of the immune system, which would lead us to cure diabetes," said the researcher.
In addition, Fatima Bosch, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Director of the Animal Biotechnology and gene therapy Center of the Autonomous Univesit of Barcelona, will present in the Diabetes Experience Day the advances of their research group in which they have managed to completely cure diabetesType 1 in dogs through a single gene therapy session, that is, modifying genes to get glucose to the muscles.This is the first time that the disease is cured in large animals, a fundamental step for the application of humans.Research, based on the introduction of a “glucose sensor” in the muscle.
