Specialists from the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas (UAT) develop projects that seek to stop disorders caused by gestational diabetes, through tests and the development of new drugs.
Dr. Enriqueta Muñoz Islands, a research professor at the Reynosa Aztlán Multidisciplinary Academic Unit (UAMRA) and the IPN Research and Study Center (Cinvestav) of the IPN, commented that in addition to contributing to avoid public health problems, the works contemplate the trainingof human resources.
"We intend to increase with more financial resources the work that is being carried out in the area of arthritis, pain, diabetes and cardiovascular pharmacology," he said.
He said that in his experience there are projects that relate pharmacology to cardiovascular and neurovascular processes, associated with hypertension, diabetes and gestational diabetes.
"Our works are based on basic research mainly, that is, we use animal models, in this case, rats, which will produce a characteristic that resembles a human disease such as gestational diabetes," he said.
"It's about trying various medications or discovering the mechanisms related to these pathologies, which in many cases is not determined," he said.
He said that efforts are aimed at improving the quality of scientific research in the country, but also responding to actions to the most pressing needs of communities.
He pointed out that gestational diabetes affects women during pregnancy, a condition that does not allow future mothers to use sugars and starches that take food to produce energy.
"This fact makes the body of pregnant women accumulate additional sugar in the blood, which threatens her life and that of the product"
