Diabetes is the main cause of the death of 60 people every year in this city and to reduce the incidence, the Department of Health has an educational program that will begin a new cycle today.
"We invite the people who want to participate to go today at 8:00 in the morning to the 2600 Cedar clinic for the start of the program living better," said Dr. Héctor González.
The director of Health in Laredo added that this program focuses on modifying the lifestyle of those who are at risk of diabetes or that they already have the disease.
During a period of six weeks, weekly sessions are held where they learn to control diabetes or avoid it through healthy eating and through the practice of regular exercise.
The sessions are designed for people with diabetes, for their relatives and in general for all who want to educate themselves about the ways of preventing and controlling this disease that causes serious renal damage and in the heart if they are not taken care of.
It is recommended to go on an empty stomach to do a blood test and glucose measurement, with the aim of evaluating it again at the end of the program.
In "living better", specialists in nutrition participate that teach people to cook in a healthy way and also work experts in basic exercise that adults can perform regardless of their condition and age.
The program is fundamental in Laredo, where an epidemic of obesity has been declared that causes a high incidence of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension in addition to heart problems.
The problem is so serious that it affects more than 70 percent of adults and 30 percent of primary school children.
