Is there anything more important for parents than the well -being of their children?

The Wall Street Journal publishes an interesting article about what happens when we combine children, type 1 diabetes and technology. And the mixture is, at least, amazing.

A family Calabrese, from San Diego, have combined a subcutaneous sensor that measures the blood glucose level every five minutes, an automatic dosing from an old insulin pump model and a small system that, with the appropriate software, is capableof having permanently monitored the level of blood glucose and dosing insulin, also automatically, if necessary.

It is not the only case, other people have been based on the Openops project (artificial Pancreas System), an open initiative aimed at advising on how to create devices of this type to people suffering from this disease and who, obviously, cannot wait forCommercial products reach the market.

The risks are higher than they will offer, of course, and most concentrate on an error in the algorithm that is responsible for insulin injection when necessary, as well as the "home" injection system itself. However, with good supervision, the Calabrese have already trusted the health of their child, nine years old, to their homemade device.

It would have to change the name. That "artificial pancreas" does not reflect at all these devices.A sad bomb connected to an inactive interstitial sensor.

En 1922 descubrieron la insulina, en 1930 la insulina lenta. ¿Que c*** han hecho desde entonces?

In any case, it seems like a great initiative, and it is more than you say @sherpa41, take a look at the website Link

Although it is in English I put it here:

What is #openaps?

The artificial Open Pancreas System Project (#openaps) is an Open and Transparent Effort to Make Safe and Effective Basic Artificial Pancreas System (APS) Technology Widely Available to More Quickly Improve and Save As Many Lives As Possible and Reduces The Burden of Ty.

Openops Means Basic Overnight Closed Loop Aps Technology Is More Widely Available To Anyone With Compatible Medical Devices Who Is Willing To Build Their Own System.

We Believe That We Can Make Safe and Effective Aps Technology Available More Quickly, To More People, Rather Than Just Waiting for Current Aps Efforts To Complete Clinical Trials and Be Fda-Approved and Commercialized Through Tradition Process. And in the process, We Believe We Can Engage The UntaPped Potential of Dozens Or Possibly Hundreds of Patient Innovators and Independent Researchers and Also Make Aps Technology Available To Hundreds Or Thousands of People Willing to Participate As Subjects In Clinical Trials.

The Body of Work by The Openops Community includes to Safety-Focused Reference Design, to Toolset, and an Open Source Reference Implementation that can be used by an individual-or Any Medical Device Manufacturer. We Believe This Will in Turn Allow Manufacturers (and the Academic Research Teams They Work With) to turn more of their attention to Designing and Testing More Advanced Aps Systems, and Thereby Accelerate The Pace of Innovation Toward New and Improved Type 1 Diabetes Treatments, andeventually to Cure.

PLEASE Note That Openops Community Efforts Will Be Open Source and Free For Use for Other People, Open Source Projects, Researchers, and Non-Profits To Use, and Available On An Open and Non-Discriminatory Basis for All Commercial Manufacturers to use in proprietary productionif desired.

I until they take a real MCG in real time and that nothing fails, and 100 % reliable and an insulin of immediate effect I do not see it clear.

We all know and do not count that at the particular level there is much more behind the news.Legally it cannot be counted.
