Researchers of the Hadassah University Medical Center together with other different points of the globe, discovered that a medicine used to treat type II diabetes can prevent or delay some types of breast cancer.
The medicine is named after metformin (with brand names such as Glucophage) and was discovered in a study carried out in 8 thousand patients around the world to reduce the risk of her-2 breast cancer.It was the first time in a study that this medicine was used in women, which appeared published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
“So far there were preclinical studies in this field, using laboratory crops and mice.These showed that the supply of metformin and diabetes related medications in mice can prevent or delay the recurrence of breast cancer, while not supplying it can raise the risk of the return of the disease, ”said Dr. Amir Sonnenblick,of Hassah.
The international team concluded that a careful dose in such patients with diabetes can have a dramatic effect on protecting women with such cancer."Metformin can improve the worst prognosis that is associated with diabetes and insulin treatment, primarily in patients with positive and hormonal positive cancer," said the equipment.
