The seasonal influenza vaccine could offer people with type 2 diabetes some protection against premature death, it suggests a recent study.

The flu vaccine also seemed to protect people with type 2 diabetes from hospitalizations for a stroke (stroke), in addition to heart and respiratory problems, the study said.

British researchers observed a large group (of more than 124,500 people) with type 2 diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes are usually a higher risk of cardiovascular problems, the researchers noted.

During the seven -year study, the researchers found that the influenza vaccine was associated with a 19 percent reduction in admissions to the hospital during the flu season due to heart attack in people with type 2 diabetes.

Admissions to the hospital for a stroke were reduced by 30 percent among those who were vaccinated against the flu.Admissions for heart failure were also reduced by 22 percent, and 15 percent for pneumonia or influenza among people with type 2 diabetes that were vaccinated against the flu.

The mortality rate between those who received a flu vaccine was 24 percent lower than among those who did not vaccinate, the researchers said.

The study was not designed to test a causal link between the flu vaccine and the reduction in mortality and admissions to the hospital. But the study did show a firm connection between those factors.

The results show that "people with type 2 diabetes could obtain substantial benefits from current vaccines, which include protection against hospital admission to some important cardiovascular results," wrote the author of the study, Dr. Eszter Vamos, and its collaborators, from the Imperial College of London.

"These findings underline the importance of the influenza vaccine as part of a comprehensive secondary prevention in this high -risk population," the researchers said.

The study appears in the July 25 edition of CMAJ magazine.
