In Puerto Rico they meant an expense of 388 million dollars for the Public Health Plan of the Government and private insurers, according to a statement released today that is based on a study on the problem of Dr. Mariela Torres.

The analysis was based on the analysis of the information available in 2013 of 1.5 million adults between 18 and 64 years, representing 59.6% of the population in Puerto Rico that had that year with health insurance, either privateor of the island's government.

The study also concluded that 58% of the 388 million dollars corresponded to expenses attributed to people who had coverage of private plans.

The document indicates that the 102,500 patients diagnosed with diabetes in 2013 were 6.8% of the 1.5 million adults between 18 and 64 years old that was taken as the basis.

He also showed that the prevalence of the disease was greater among the beneficiaries of the public sector than among those who had private insurance.

"In the public sector, the major expense occurred in hospital services -53.8% -. On the other hand, in the private sector the major spending occurred in outpatient services -54.6% -. The results suggest that access to health servicesPrimary in the public sector is limited and that there is no continuity of care, which leads to high costs in health services, "concluded Dr. Torres.

Torres developed research as part of the requirements to complete their doctoral studies at the Graduate Public Health School of the Medical Sciences Campus with a specialty in analysis and research of health and management systems.
