An international study shows that many patients with type 2 diabetes suffer depression.

It proposes to include the diagnosis of depression in the consultation of patients with type 2 diabetes, since the control of this disorder would facilitate adhesion to the treatment of diabetes.

The Italian hospital in Buenos Aires participated in an international study, which shows high depression rates in patients with type 2 diabetes. The research was presented at the Annual Meeting of the European Association for the study of diabetes.

3,000 patients were analyzed in 15 countries, including Argentina, Bangladesh, China, Germany, India, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Thailand, Uganda and Ukraine. This is the first study of these characteristics that analyzes the coexistence of these diseases, providing new opportunities to identify the most effective treatments.

Improving depression diagnosis and other mental disorders helps optimize diabetes treatment results. The study shows that between 10 and 30% of diabetics suffer depression. However, in most countries, the diagnosis of depression is very poor or - even - non -existent.Therefore, it is important that the patient lets the doctor know if he feels unusually tired, if he has difficulty concentrating, if he experiences changes in appetite or in the sleep pattern.
