Paris.- A group of French researchers has discovered in animals an alternative ways for morbid obesity surgeries that treat diabetes: the application of electrical stimuli in a nerve of the abdomen.

"This therapeutic strategy launches the electrical stimulation of the vago nerve at the level of the abdomen and opens promising perspectives to prevent type 2 diabetes," the National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA) said in a statement.

According to INRA, this technique "constitutes an alternative to bariatric surgery (stomach reduction), a hard technique for patients" that want to combat diabetes (insulin resistance).

The device is formed by electrodes connected in a subcutaneous stimulation box that promotes glucose transport in the musculoskeletal system, "probably thanks to the secretion increased by a hormone released by the stomach (Ghrelin)."

The French company of neuro-stimulation systems Axonic is “currently in a validation phase” of a neurological prosthesis that can meet the standards of European devices, said National Institute of Agronomic Research.
