In recent years, the incidence of diabetes - especially the type 2, that is, related to the obesity and way of life of people - has been growing exponentially and has already become one of the main problemsHealth in our society.
Aware of the need to focus on the treatment of this disease in a more effective way, the Xarxa of Santa Tecla has created the figure of the expert consulting nurse in diabetes, linked to the endocrinology unit.This new professional profile allows to unify criteria and protocols in the management of treatments application devices and, at the same time, train and advise professionals and patients.
Olga Gómez, with a long experience in nursing treatment and research in Diabetes, is the new Diabetes expert nurse of the Xarxa de Santa Tecla, a figure that does not exist in any other center of the Catalan health system and which has as its missionmain to become the link between the endocrinology team, the professionals of the different care and the patients themselves, for the optimization of the management of this disease.
Among its main functions will be to educate professionals, patients and their relatives in the disease;It will also offer permanent consulting (immediately or virtual), training and research, valuing the new studies carried out by research societies and advances in devices and treatments that appear in the market, to incorporate them into the day to day.
It will also be responsible for advising on the purchase of new equipment and devices for health centers, as well as collecting all the contributions of professionals and implanting innovations that are beneficial, establishing circuits that allow to give a unit treatment to all patients, regardless ofcenter where they are visited.
«The infrastructure of the Xarxa of Santa Tecla, with two hospitals and six àreas bàsiques de Salut (ABS) in the Tarragonès and the Baix Penedès, required a figure that unified the task of all professionals who are related to the treatment of diabetes, to facilitate their work and also to reverse it for the benefit of patients, ”says Olga Gómez.
