A study by the beneficial organization Diabetes UK explains that the diagnosis of type 1 and 2 diabetes have doubled in the last 20 years, since 1998. However, they explain that type 2 diabetes is the one that has increased the most and relate it directlywith the highest rates of obesity.

And now, there are about 3.7 million people 17 years or more who live with the disease in the country.

The analysis does not break down the figures in the two main forms of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. But Nikki Joule, Diabetes UK manager, said that other investigations had shown that although the diagnoses of both had increased, the increase was significantly greater inType 2.

And, even if they both bear the same name, these are completely different diseases. Thus, type 1 diabetes is not associated with weight, it is an autoimmune condition in which there is no insulin and there is no way to prevent it.It can begin in childhood and represents approximately 10% of diabetes cases.Type 2 diabetes, where little insulin or insulin is produced is of poor quality, is related to obesity and generally begins later in life, being able to prevent 60% of cases.

Bradford, Harrow and West Birmingham show the highest diabetic figures at 10.43%, 9.40% and 9.14% of the population respectively, while Richmond has a prevalence of only 3.63%.For its part, Camden and the center of London collect just over 4%.

UK Diabetes says that the number of people with diabetes is likely to be even higher than the latest data suggests, with calculations that indicate that almost one million people in the United Kingdom have non -diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

Naveed Sattar, professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Glasgow Sattar added that "type 2 diabetes diagnosed in young people is dangerous and substantially increases the possibilities of premature death."
