Jaén Diabetics Association: 15% of people with diabetes in Jaén

Every November 14, diabetes is the protagonist.Informing and raising awareness is the task they face on this world day who suffer from it and health institutions to advance early detection and treatments.As a curiosity, this date was chosen for being the day Frederick Grant Banting, discoverer, along with Charles Bestm, of insulin.

Torredelcampo hosted one of the activities organized in the province around this disease.The territorial delegate of equality, health and social policies, Teresa Vega, was together with the Jaén Aden Diabetics Association and there highlighted the most outstanding data and actions around this disease, such as the early detection of diabetic retinopathy, which canget to cause blindness.

Up to 34,812 people with diabetes have undergone digital retinography in the province of Jaén in order to detect the affectation of the eye by diabetic retinopathy and avoid eventual blindness when they can still benefit from a treatment.This figure assumes that, since its launched in 2006, the coverage of the program has progressively grown until currently reaching 95% of the “target” population to which it is directed - patients with diabetes to which they have not beenDiagnosed this problem in vision.In total, since the beginning of the program, 62,206 retinographies have been carried out in the Jiennense province.

"It is a disease that has very important data of relevance, we talk about 15% of the population is diagnosed as a diabetics and another 15% is at risk of suffering this disease," said the territorial health delegate.For this reason, he highlighted the importance of developing information and awareness activities to the population to prevent and control the main complications of diabetes, such as diabetic retinopathy.The first symptoms of this disease, when they appear, is usually in advanced phases, when it is too late for healing, and hence the importance of detecting it early.It is estimated that between 15 and 30% of people with diabetes suffer from retinopathy and that the risk of blindness can be reduced by more than 60% if it is diagnosed soon.Currently, the health centers of the Jiennense province have 30 retinographers of the 143 existing screening equipment in Primary Care in Andalusia.

Diabetes affects more than 56,905 Jiennenses, of which 29,674 are men and more than 27,231 are women.Precisely, the world -day celebration motto focuses on women.
