During pregnancy women present a series of hormonal changes that can generate negative and serious effects such as gestational diabetes, a condition marked by the inability to correctly regulate sugar levels due to the action of hormones, although in many cases it usually disappears after childbirth.

It is a condition that suffers more than half of pregnant women in the world, according to a report published by Cleveland Clinic in 2016.

‘Diabetes is a disease that has no symptoms and over the years is generating chronic and irreparable damage.
The report details that normally gestational diabetes is diagnosed between weeks 24 and 28 of pregnancy (which is when insulin resistance begins).

So Dr. Nelson Rodríguez recommends the pregnant woman with glucose tests during those weeks to avoid alterations on sugar levels in metabolism, since, one in seven births in the world is affected by gestational diabetes.

‘Due to that ailment, the child and the mother run the risk of developing in adolescence obesity and type 2 diabetes. In addition, the mother, if not controlled, can suffer complications during pregnancy and childbirth, 'he details.

The researchers followed up for 255 obese adolescents for three years, of which one in five had been exposed to gestational diabetes in the uterus.

At the beginning of the study, the evidence showed that all adolescents had normal glucose tolerance. But three years later, teenagers born to mothers with gestational diabetes were six times more likely to have progressed to prediabetes or diabetes than those born of mothers who had not suffered it.

Women can realize that they suffer from gestational diabetes because they can present symptoms such as blurred vision, fatigue, strong infections, a lot of thirst, desire to urinate from followed, nausea, vomiting, weight loss even though there is an increase in appetite.

Rodríguez comments that it is extremely important and necessary to keep prenatal control from the hand of a doctor.

In the case of pregnant women, it is best to do physical activity (under the doctor's recommendation) accompanied by healthy and balanced eating; It is the best way to prevent pregnancy without gestational diabetes.

Diabetes is not a death sentence, but a treatable and preventable condition.

‘As diabetes does not hurt and either has visible symptoms people do not pay attention. That is why every day in the world we see younger with type 2 'diabetes, highlights Rodríguez and adds that a controlled diabetic person lives the same as the one who does not suffer from it,' he says.
