The risk of type 2 diabetes in women who previously had gestational diabetes increases, especially 3 to 6 years after gestational diabetes, according to the results of a macro study published in Obesity Reviews.

Xilin Yang, professor and head of the Department of Epidemiology and Bioestadistics of the Faculty of Public Health of the Medical University of Tianjin in China, and their colleagues conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 30 studies that included 2,626,905 pregnant women to determine the effectof gestational diabetes in the long -term risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Participants with gestational diabetes had almost 8% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared to those women without the pathology.The cross -numbers of the studies show that the risk of type 2 diabetes is very high especially in the first 6 years after gestational diabetes.

The study highlights the importance of initiating the patient's lifestyle intervention during the 3 years after gestational diabetes.That is, train the patient during that period to develop good eating habits and exercise practice, with the aim of avoiding the appearance of type 2 diabetes and future cardiovascular complications.

Several random controlled trials are being carried out to prove the effectiveness of lifestyle intervention in women with previous gestational diabetes, we will see the results in the coming months.
