The IMSS Jalisco provides treatment to 295 thousand 472 patients suffering from diabetes mellitus, with several years of evolution of the disease and in all age groups, said Public Health Coordinator at the institution, Silvia Valencia Espinoza.

The specialist of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) indicated that Jalisco, being one of the largest entities in the country is among the first 30 states with the highest prevalence of diabetes in Mexico, and occupies the place 19 in overweight and obesity.

He explained that patients who are detected with diabetic disease and who did not know that they suffered from it are more exposed to developing complications such as renal insufficiency, ulcers, cataracts or diabetic view problems.

The expert also said that they are vulnerable to respiratory effects such as influenza, because they constantly have a decrease in their defenses due to the deterioration of the immune system that causes the lack of control of their blood glucose.

"They need to protect themselves, now is the time to avoid developing influenza applying the vaccine which takes about two weeks to generate the antibodies, in them it is common for the disease to develop more intensely," he said.

Valencia Espinoza indicated that the Prevenims program plays a fundamental role in the detections of this disease, so far this year, 75 thousand 88 diabetes tests in older adults, 51 thousand 948 in women from 20 to 59 years of age have been carried out, and in 38 thousand 159 in men of the same age range.

He recalled that the IMSS has the PrevenimsS program in companies, which facilitates workers' health and disease detection even when they cannot regularly attend their family medicine units (UMF).

In addition, he pointed out that the Institute has the Diabetimsss strategy in which two thousand 800 patients with diabetes are treated in order to prevent complications in them and ensure that they remain in control of the disease.
