The meetings intend to educate and raise awareness about one of the diseases with the most incidence in the archipelago.

The Department of Citizen Participation of the City Council of La Laguna is carrying out a series of talks about diabetes in the citizen centers of the towns and neighborhoods of the municipality.

The first deputy mayor and councilor of the area, the socialist Mónica Martín, points out that it is a program that intends to "educate and raise awareness" about the causes and consequences of one of the diseases that has the greatest incidence in the Canarian population.It is, on a series of talks aimed at public of all ages and that are focused, above all, "to transmit practical advice to lead a healthy life," says Martín.

This project has been touring the Laguito municipality since the beginning of May and its next stop will be today in the Citizen Center of San Bartolomé de Geneto.The appointment will take place between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.This talk, like all the others that are carried out, are offered by professionals and volunteers of the Red Cross -collaborated institution of the initiative -, and in them the possibility of performing a quick test is also made available to the participantsof blood glucose.

The Socialist Councilor Mónica Martín recalled that the Canary Islands has one of the highest rates in the country of affected by type 1 diabetes and has referred to medical diagnoses that point to this scenario is largely linked to theeating habits of the population.For this reason, these informative meetings with citizens are responsible for emphasizing the "importance of practicing a healthy life as a better measure towards diabetes prevention."This disease causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to be very high.

The following scheduled talks within this series of special activities promoted by the Department of Citizen Participation of the City Council of La Laguna will take place in the Citizen Centers of the butter, next Friday;in Barrio Nuevo, on Monday of next week;in Las Mercedes, on the 13th of this month;and in Guamasa, on the 15th.
