The Research Group in Obesity, Diabetes and Metabolism (ODIM) of the Biomedical Research Institute of Lleida (Irblleida) has shown that diabetes negatively affects breathing during sleep, confirming it as an independent risk factor of presenting night hypoxiaserious.

This research, in which the Translation Research Group participates in Respiratory Medicine that Ferran Barbé leads, is focused on analyzing the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus and respiratory function during sleep, a relationship that has not been addressed by any otherSpanish or European Research Group, Irbllieda reported on a statement.

"The lung has to be considered as one of the target organs of the complications produced by diabetes," said the head of the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service of the Arnau University Hospital in Vilanova and principal researcher of Irblleida, Albert Lecube.

"Apart from worrying about the presence of certain diseases associated with diabetes, such as retinopathy, we also have to ask how people with diabetes breathe," Lecube explained.

The head of the research group clarifies that before the same diagnosis of sleep apnea syndrome, it will have to be considered more serious in people with diabetes.

"Patients with diabetes, and especially those with higher blood glucose figures, have a greater degree of diurnal drowsiness and worse sleep quality," Lecube reported.

World Diabetes Day is celebrated on November 14 with the aim of publicizing diabetes and sensitizing society about this disease, and the anniversary of the birth of Frederick Grant Banting is commemorated, one of the discoverers of insulin in insulin in1922.
