Why COVID-19 increases the risk of diabetes, according to a study

fer's profile photo   07/25/2022 10:31 a.m.

Much was seen and investigated since the beginning of the Pandemia by COVID-19 on the effects of the virus in the body, both during the acute picture of the infection and after the high epidemiological. The great inflammation, which the specialists called as "cytokine storm," drives a mechanism that can aggravate the disease, as well as to leave long -term consequences.

And beyond what is known as prolonged covid, long covid or post covid syndrome, which is even more or less effects on organs that go beyond the respiratory system and that are typical of the systemic inflammatory picture caused by the SARS-COV-2, a recent study revealed that "the people who are infected with Coronavirus have a greater risk of diagnosing diabetes and cardiovascular conditions for weeks after the infection has strengthened."

According to an important study conducted in the United Kingdom, “the risk of heart and circulatory problems, such as irregular heartbeat and blood clots in the lungs, was almost six times higher in patients with COVID-19 than in people not infected with itAge and sex, and 80% higher for diabetes during the month after infection. ”

King’s College researchers in London collected health records from more than 400,000 patients with coronavirus in the United Kingdom and the same number of people who avoided the virus. Then they reviewed the records to detect new cardiovascular or diabetes diagnoses for a maximum of 12 months, and the last patient was followed until last January.

"We found that cardiovascular disease increased early after COVID-19, mainly due to pulmonary embolism, atrial arrhythmias and venous thrombosis," said the authors of the work in the publication of their conclusions. The incidence of diabetes mellitus remained high, for at least 12 weeks after Covid-19, before decreasing.People without cardiovascular disease or pre-existing diabetes mellitus suffering from COVID-19 do not seem to have a long-term increase in the incidence of these conditions. ”

As they saw, the greatest risk of cardiovascular conditions returned to normal seven weeks after giving positive for Covid, but for diabetes the greatest proportion of new diagnoses took almost six months to return to reference levels.

Dr. Emma Rezel-Potts is an epidemiologist of the King's College in London and on what was found at work, she stated that “it is really that doctors are aware of the possible increase in risk for their patients and, in particular, how they can reduce theRisk of diabetes in the first three months after infection through an improved diet and exercising. ”

While it was seen that COVID-19 can cause direct damage to the organs and the circulatory system, Rezel-Potts emphasized that many factors could explain the findings.“For example, patients with COVID in the study were more likely to be overweight and more underlying health problems than the non -infected control group, which predisposed them to other conditions. Some patients may have had non -diagnosed diabetes or heart problems that only came to light when they were infected with Covid. ”

While the researchers did not even determine a "cause-effect" relationship between the coronavirus and the appearance of these pathologies, they insisted that doctors should be attentive to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases when patients are infected Covid, and remind themthat simple changes in lifestyle can help reduce the risk of additional diseases. ”

As they saw in the investigation, which was published in the PLOS Medicine magazine, the encouraging data is that"In the long term, the risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes seems to return to reference levels.""But we must be cautious in the acute period of cardiovascular disease and take into account that the risk of diabetes seems to rise for several months, so it could be a good opportunity for risk prevention," said Rezel-Potts.

For Dr. Faye Riley, "there is more and more evidence that COVID could be triggering new cases of diabetes in some people, and the last study sheds light on when and how long the risk could be."

“While the growing evidence is worrying, it is not yet clear if the COVID-19 is directly causing new cases of diabetes, if it is bringing in light cases of previously diagnosed diabetes or if there are other factors at stake-observed the specialist-.There is also much to learn about the types of diabetes that could trigger COVID-19 ″.

The specialists agreed that “it is important that everyone is aware of the signs and symptoms of diabetes, such as inexplicable weight loss, the feeling of thirst or fatigue, or going to the bathroom more frequently, whether it has hadCovid-19 or not. ”

How viral disease that is, can trigger an autoimmune response in predisposed people, in my case they were a girl's paper. In DM type 2, someone who was on the limit, with infection and corticosteroids, can be manifested.

In my daughter, the Coxsackie virus was also the trigger. There are several viruses that cause an autoimmune reaction and some are very studied, there should already be vaccines ..

It happened to me ... I had no history in my family and my analytics a year ago were perfect: neither cholesterol, nor sugar, ... it was to give negative in Covid and that same week I manifest the diabetes

I commented a few days ago yes.I am absolutely convinced that my Autoimmune diabetes debut was as a result of the coronavirus. And from what I am checking I am not the only one, rather I would qualify it as a new epidemic ... Anyway there are more people than approximately a month and a half after the Covid debut, to comment. The study mentioned in the article is called Covidiab, is English and are collecting data. Here in Spain, to see them come as always.

I had the Covid in September 2020 and the diagnosis of diabetes in September 2021, a year later. My endocrine does not relate it in my case, however they have observed a significant increase in debuts in children related to COVID.These presented diabetes during the infection itself or immediately after overcoming the COVID.
I get a lot.Between the Covid and the debut I have not had a sad cold, nothing.I started to notice rare in May, if my diabetes is lada, I could have started destroying my pancreas after covid and having endured to ketoacidosis a year later.
On the other hand, nothing changes;Just know if I must remember my ancestors (by inheritance) or the damn Chinese (for the Covid).

That was the candidas, which I knew us until then .... & GT; :)
No idea, according to the endocrine my pancreas has been bombarded years and years until he could no longer; As I was never sick as a girl, beyond measles and chickenpox (in my time there was no vaccine beyond natural immunity) or adult, it is not known.I also have no family history. It is a toast to the sun.
That if the whole set: ketoacidosis, antibodies, very high glyc, exaggerated blood glucose, peptide C over 1 scarce, thirst, hunger, frequent urine ... It was easy for the emergency department that attended me.

Hello, you will mean me.I have been in this group to have been convinced that my debut had to do with the Covid year in this group.Today I remain convinced of this, in fact I still do not use insulin although my levels are not excellent, they are prediabetes.I am an atypical case, in the negative di antibody test but my peptide C is low, I think it attacked the pancreas.I am waiting for me to do the test again to see if it has lowered me.

To my TB it happened to me.I passed the Covid at the end of November 2020 and debuted on February, with many symptoms, I was a lot of thirst, I urinated, and on February at the company's medical examination, 279 approx. My glyc was 12 or 13, I don't remember.I responded well to the treatment of pills and in a week it went down.I currently do not take anything, no pills or insulin. The antibody test gave negative.I do not take barely hydrates and try to exercise although now in summer it is costing me more.

I remain convinced that you are type 2. Without antibodies it can be nothing else. And confirms that you have been without medication of any kind for more than a year. That is impossible in Lada or type 1.

We talked about type 1 clear, my case was with antibodies detected in analytics. As all this is new, it is not known whether these diabetes by Covid will disappear or not.I can only talk about my case, three months later my analytics say that the pancreas still works at half a gas.

I think like @isabelbota, @smartinez you are type 2.
I am Lada and the first year I did not use fast, but basal insulin if, small quantities but it is necessary because the pancreas does not work, it does not generate insulin, beyond the one in the reserve.Metformin also sent it to me but does not work in a strain, does not go down to normal values, is not enough.

As type 2 block what you tell, your body at the moment covers your low diet in hydrates and consumes glycemia with exercise; This is my 90 -year -old uncle since the 40s who were diagnosed. He doesn't take anything, but he eats few hydrates and walks a lot.
If you made a more normal, Mediterranean diet, oral antidiabetic need because your pancreas generates insulin but not all that would need you in a day for a diet of 130 g of HC.

@isabelbota @ruthbia I hope that was as you say, if they told me that with this diet and exercise it could be for life ......, my endo told me that I would go down little by little, in fact the last time I lowered mefrom 0.90 to 0.60 the peptide c.That the endocrine agreed, because mine says that even if it is negative antibodies the low C peptide is lada, and I will end up being type 1, it is assumed that a DT2 generates a lot of insulin and there I do not paint.Come on, I'm a weirdo q.Or any place, hahaha.I still think that Covid has had much to see.Besides, I think I am the type Lada PQ when I neglect and as something I should not go up to 200 with ease and even at 2 hours after having eaten, I do not know if a type 2 happens to a type 2

It can be type 2 with exhausted pancreas, as is my case, which slow and fast (although for now not at all meals). But what characterizes type 1 or lada are antibodies.
A type 2 can have insulin resistance, normally overweight, and therefore generates a lot.Or not generate due to pancreas malfunction.
And yes, to a type2 the glucose uploads enough when he eats, if not, it would not be diabetic ... 😉

After the Covid in style in DBT1, I have to use quickly at all meals, but 6-7ud.How much, basal 13 and positive antibodies, in peptide C ... 0'40.
The happy virus left me a good gift, but you have to thank that I am still alive, that how many people with Covid cannot tell it!So you have to enjoy this opportunity that they have given us ..... Much 💪 for everyone

I also believe that my son's debut was for that.I have no evidence but you don't doubt.A month after giving negative began with symptoms, and 15 days later he was diagnosed with DM1.
