It is being investigated in the medical field: the potential of metformin, a well -known medication for type 2 diabetes, in the fight against aging.

Metformin has been used for years to help diabetic patients to control their blood sugar levels. But did you know that now it is also being studied for its possible anti -aging effects?

Some recent studies have suggested that metformin could offer more than just glucose control. In fact, there are research that have observed that diabetic patients treated with metformin may have greater life expectancy compared to non -diabetic people. In addition, there are studies that link their use with a lower incidence of cancer or dementia.

However, these studies are not definitive. Many of them have limitations that prevent attributing a direct benefit to the medication in the context of aging.Even so, the potential is intriguing enough to carry out more research.

In Spain, more than 15 hospitals, under the coordination of the University of Navarra Clinic, are carrying out a clinical trial with metformin to try to stop the accelerated aging caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).This study, which will be extended over the next three years, seeks not only to stop the progression of emphysema and loss of lung function, but also prevent other comorbidities related to age.

The exciting thing about metformin is that it is an economic medicine, widely available and with a known security profile. This means that if the studies are successful, we could have an accessible tool to combat some of age -related diseases.

Of course, it is still early to draw conclusions. But it seems important to me that we are aware of these research, since they could mean a great advance in medicine and the improvement of our quality of life as we age.

Meanwhile, remember that metformin is a medication and, as such, it must be prescribed and used under medical supervision, specially designed for those who really need it.

I am excited to continue listening to the advances in this area.

Let's keep us informed and healthy!A big hug.
