What happens when each doctor sees a part, but nobody sees the whole?

The risk of fragmented approach to people with diabetes, or what is the same, when health care does not take into account the global situation of the patient, but also acts in a compartmentalized way and attending only to what corresponds to each specialty.

A recent study has lit alarms on a very common problem and, at the same time, very dangerous: fragmented medical attention, especially in people with diabetes who also receive treatment of hemodialysis due to chronic kidney disease (ERC).

👩‍⚕️ The study, awarded in the Dominican Congress of Endocrinology and Nutrition 2024, analyzed 71 patients in hemodialysis.Although most said "follow their diseases", only 7% of diabetes patients had regular endocrinological monitoring. The rest went to the doctor only when there was already a crisis.

This means that metabolic, fundamental control to avoid serious complications, is totally neglected. In addition, none of the patients followed nutritional controls or had psychological support, two essential pillars in the treatment of diabetes and renal health.

⚠️ The consequences are clear:

  • Frequent hospitalizations
  • More Emergency visits
  • Faster disease progression
  • Lower opportunities to opt for renal transplantation

The study concludes something key: even in advanced stages of the disease, a multidisciplinary approach can greatly improve the prognosis and quality of life.

💡 What can we learn as a community?

Which is vital to fight that fragmented health vision. We need care networks that work together: endocrine, nephrologists, nutritionists, psychologists ... and well -informed patients.

Have you ever felt that your medical attention has been fragmented?

How have you managed it?

The AI helps me a lot, it is able to take into account all my problems, not only those of diabetes and offer me advice adapted to all.

Doctors can barely have one in mind and are full of prejudices.

En 1922 descubrieron la insulina, en 1930 la insulina lenta. ¿Que c*** han hecho desde entonces?

The doctor or specialist proposes something to me, I tell him that I have another problem that prevents me from doing that and they are already blank and they tell me "well."On the other hand, Chatgpt or Grok come up with many things.

Also, typical that anything that tells the doctor, says that it is basically for diabetes, either a grain or that your shoulder hurts, I instead give you many more possible causes, that prejudice does not have so marked.

Then of course you have to check a little with Google and with your same criteria.Since they are not 100% reliable.
