The risk of fragmented approach to people with diabetes, or what is the same, when health care does not take into account the global situation of the patient, but also acts in a compartmentalized way and attending only to what corresponds to each specialty.
A recent study has lit alarms on a very common problem and, at the same time, very dangerous: fragmented medical attention, especially in people with diabetes who also receive treatment of hemodialysis due to chronic kidney disease (ERC).
👩⚕️ The study, awarded in the Dominican Congress of Endocrinology and Nutrition 2024, analyzed 71 patients in hemodialysis.Although most said "follow their diseases", only 7% of diabetes patients had regular endocrinological monitoring. The rest went to the doctor only when there was already a crisis.
This means that metabolic, fundamental control to avoid serious complications, is totally neglected. In addition, none of the patients followed nutritional controls or had psychological support, two essential pillars in the treatment of diabetes and renal health.
⚠️ The consequences are clear:
- Frequent hospitalizations
- More Emergency visits
- Faster disease progression
- Lower opportunities to opt for renal transplantation
The study concludes something key: even in advanced stages of the disease, a multidisciplinary approach can greatly improve the prognosis and quality of life.
💡 What can we learn as a community?
Which is vital to fight that fragmented health vision. We need care networks that work together: endocrine, nephrologists, nutritionists, psychologists ... and well -informed patients.
