Although the global figures are not encouraging, in Spain we have registered a small good news: during the year 2024, the cases of type 1 diabetes and type 2 in adults have dropped slightly, from 5,141,300 cases in 2021 to 5,121,600 in 2024. The prevalence has also declined a little, from 14.8 % to 14.1 %.
It is true that the descent is mild, but it is still a positive step in a global context in whichDiabetes continues to increase at a worrying pace.Worldwide, there are already 589 million people with diabetes, 53 million more than in 2021. Type 1 diabetes also grows: 9.1 million cases are estimated at all ages.
⚠️ The worrying thing is that38 % of cases in Spain still do not diagnose, and that has a direct impact on people's health, which often do not know that they live with the disease until complications appear.
💸 As for health expenditure, in our country it has increased slightly (from 14,260 to 14,420 million euros), which suggests that more budget is being allocated by patient, something essential to improve the quality of life of those who live with diabetes. However, worldwide, spending per person has dropped, which can be an alert signal in many countries.
🌍 The report also indicates a strongglobal inequality: The greatest increase in cases is taking place in regions with less resources, where access to diagnosis, treatment, insulin and technologies remains very limited. And the projections for 2050 are not optimistic: it is estimated that there will be 852.5 million people with diabetes.
