hospitalize 9 Chinese for using false medicine for diabetes

Nine people from the Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang, northwest of China, were hospitalized after having taken a false drug against diabetes that caused death to two other people in January, the local government reported today.

Four of the nine people are being treated at the Popular Hospital of Kashi and are in stable condition.Five other were discharged from the hospital, said a spokesman from the Kashi government.

Kashi's food and medication bureau informed that a man named Ye Danjun sold a "Tang Zhi None Jiao Nang" brand for diabetes in a rented house. He sold the medication with the trick that he gave consultations and performed free sugar.

Two people died on January 17 and 19 after taking the medication. The District Government paid the families of each of the victims 5,000 yuan ($ 731) for funeral services.

According to the investigation of the Food and Drug Safety Supervision body of the region, the medicine contained an illegal chemical ingredient, "glibenclamide", which is used to help reduce blood sugar levels. But false medications contained the normal dose of the chemist six times.

A total of 9,600 jars of the false medicine entered Kashi, of which 8,536 bottles have been recovered so far.

The police in Kashi confiscated the registered capital of the Ye company and froze their bank account.

The public security bureau, the drug supervision body and the industrial and commercial bureau undertook the investigation of the case.

Most false medications were found in Kashi and AKSU in the western part of the region, said State Food and Medicines Administration (AEAM).Until Sunday the police had confiscated 9,391 bottles in Xinjiang, of which 2,663 were withdrawn to customers.
