'It is essential to make friends with diabetes'
"You have diabetes."Although 25 years have passed since that diagnosis, José Antonio Martínez Piña has not forgotten the void in his stomach that his doctor's words left him that day."I felt a lot of fear. I barely knew what it was, so the first thing I thought was that I was going to die," he recalls.
The feeling was put in his body for a few months."Before things were very different. No one gave you information, nobody explained to you," he says.Therefore, when someone arrives with that uncertainty in the eyes of the Association of Diabetics that presides in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), he does not hesitate to refer to an educator in diabetes.
"For me, it took me to meet him, was a before and after.
"The information is very important because with diabetes you have to know how to live. It is essential to learn to be his friend and not his slave," he remarks.
'Be your own doctor'
María Ángeles Álvarez knows a lot about this learning.In his 15 years working as an educator in the Pediatric Diabetes Unit of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid, he has taught many children to live with the disease without problems."We try that the patient is almost his own doctor, to be demanding with the control of his disorder," says María Ángeles, who is delighted with a profession that he assumed almost by chance.
"I worked in the emergency department and, when I was transferred to this service I had to train. Now I don't change it for anything because it is very rewarding; you see what helps people," he says.
This nurse also underlines the importance of information."It would be necessary for more specialized units such as ours and that educators were more available," says this specialist who, despite working in Madrid, receives patients from Galicia, Asturias or Extremadura, among other communities.
'Understand diabetes and take control' is precisely the slogan chosen by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization for World Diabetes Day 2009, which is held this Saturday, November 14 on the entire planet.One of the objectives of this commemoration is to highlight the importance of education and call all governments to implement effective strategies and policies for the prevention and control of diabetes.

And what do you get hate ?????In my opinion, just getting bad blood and bad that we weigh us is incurable and that we have to accept, acceptance and a good attitude is essential for treatment, so it better to have it as "friend", today we have treatments thatThey allow us to lead a normal life, with hardly any limitations, only those that we want to wear. And I was very clear since I was diagnosed that I would not allow diabetes to become the owner of my life and for now I am doing well.

Hating her to express my frustration.
I don't know how much others have lost with this disease, I quite.Among other things, these days there is talk of the security guards who have gone to defend the alakrana and I cannot, even if I die of desire.Nor can I be a police officer or enter the army.
Anyway, I accept that I have to take care of myself and carry out the controls, but I really cannot imagine in 20 years with this.

Auto, I understand what you want to say, I do not think about having diabetes or not ... as it is something that I cannot choose to try to waste the minimum time thinking about it.
Personally I have lost many more things because of other causes than by diabetes, including a job. But the priorities are marked by each one.
Less than 90 years ago I would have died in a short time because insulin did not exist ... 10 years ago there was neither the lantus nor less ... It is likely that in 20 years things are very different.
Type 1 diabetes is not hereditary, that I know there is no study that demonstrates that type 1 have more chances of having children with diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes does have a hereditary component although with good prevention it is very feasible to avoid it.

Everyone who decides to have children plays dice.
I have a diabetic daughter and there is no one in the family who is.According to that theory, I could "" have children with guarantees, but you see, it has touched us.
However, my wedding godfather (friend, not relative) was diabetic type 1. He married and none of his 5 children or his 11 grandchildren is.
It seems good to me that you do not risk, but then you don't even adopt, because no one guarantees that after a while that child will not debut.

I have read everywhere that diabetes is hereditary.That you may not be diabetic and have a child that is but that, if you are, the chances increase.As it is something that I don't like, I don't want anyone, much less a young child.If I adopted and the child debuts ... I will have not had anything to do !!!!.I would take care of him and love him without feeling "guilty " in a way.This is only my opinion, if someone serves, that keeps it into account and if not, that completely ignores it.
To the moms and parents of children with DM I tell you that encouragement !!!You are worth a lot for being there in the gap all day without fainting.I would leave my soul.
