Do you have insulin bomb and you will go by plane?

Hello everyone!

I share important information about traveling by plane if you use an insulin pump.According to an investigation, altitude changes can affect the administration of insulin in people with type 1 diabetes that use a bomb.

The study, carried out in a hipobárica chamber that simulates the conditions of a commercial flight, showed that during the ascent, the bombs can deliver more insulin than expected due to the formation of bubbles.

During the descent, insulin supply can be less than expected. This could alter blood glucose levels, although authors do not believe that it causes serious hypoglycemia.

In rare cases, such as rapid decompression, there may be a significant excess of insulin, which could lead to severe hypoglycemia. In these extreme situations, it is recommended to consume rapid action carbohydrates to counteract it.

Dr. Ka Siu Fan, one of the study authors, suggests that people with insulin pump consider temporarily disconnecting the device before takeoff and eliminating air bubbles before connecting it to the cruise altitude to avoid effects notdesired

It is an issue to take into account for those who travel with insulin pump.

Has anyone had any similar experience or has any advice to add?
