The Hospital of Sant Pau in Barcelona is the only one in Spain that participates in the Dali Project, a clinical trial that evaluates different strategies for the prevention of gestational diabetes funded by the European Union.

The main researcher of the study at the Barcelona hospital, Dr. Rosa Corcoy, highlighted this Monday in a statement from the center that the evaluation will be done in women at risk of gestational diabetes, defined as overweight before pregnancy.

The affectation, which has increased due to the increase in body mass index (BMI), involves unfavorable effects on pregnancy and increases the risk of diseases for mother and child in the future, fundamentally cardiovascular.

A total of 10 clinical centers from 9 European countries participate in the study since it began its intervention phase in July, applying a diet, exercise, vitamin D and combinations between these as disease prevention methods.

The clinical trial will end in February 2014, and during the same year it is planned to know the first results.

Gestational diabetes affects almost 10% of pregnant women, and, despite having treatment, prevention is preferable, said Dr. Corcoy, when this Wednesday is precisely World Diabetes Day.
