Five amino acid levels can help predict the development of diabetes in the future, according to a study by the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston (United States).
These discoveries, which are published in the digital edition of the 'Nature Medicine' magazine, suggest that amino acid levels could help in the evaluation of the diabetes risk.
The researchers, led by Robert Gerszten and Thomas Wang, studied 2,422 individuals who were followed for 12 years;Among them, 201 developed diabetes.
The authors discovered that the levels of five amino acids, isoleucine, leucine, valine, tyrosine and phenylalanine, had associations raised with the future diagnosis of diabetes.
The results were replicated in an independent group, underlining the possible key role of amino acid metabolism at the beginning of diabetes.
