Guadalajara, Jalisco.- The director of the Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of the UdeG, Enrique Alfonso Roig, said that retinopathy is the first cause of blindness in Mexico in people between 20 and 50 years, because it is associated with the Altosblood glucose levels and high blood pressure.

The academic of the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) indicated that 10 percent of Mexicans, that is, suffer diabetes;Of these, one tenth presents a secondary visual disability derived from retinopathy, an asymptomatic but preventable disease.

For his part, the rector of the University Center for Health Sciences (CUCS), Jaime Andrade Villanueva, said that this center conducts international research and collaboration, as well as training of human resources to deal with this problem.

Therefore, the Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences will be the headquarters of the time of timely detection of diabetes and hypertension retinopathies, within the framework of World Visual Health Day, which is celebrated on October 8

Andrade Villanueva added that people who have diabetes and hypertension, in addition to those who exceed 60 years of age, will be able to go to this university agency where 200 students and health professionals will practice review exams.

He stressed that in case of detecting any anomaly, they will derive them to the ophthalmology service of the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara for proper treatment and possible surgeries.

The director of the Decentralized Public Agency Civil Hospital of Guadalajara, Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez, said that this initiative will be repeated on November 14, World Diabetes Day, and the State and Municipal DIF systems will participate, as well as the Mexican Retina Association.

Pérez Gómez said that it is an initiative that aims to the timely detection of these diseases and that it is intended to be done more frequently and reduce the economic, social and sanitary impact of this disease.
