Vienna, Austria (SEP/2014) .- In the fight against diabetes, the disease "takes us a great advantage", since of the total of cases in Mexico, only half has been diagnosed, said the endocrinologist of the hospitalGeneral of Mexico, Valentín Sánchez.

By participating in the 50 Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), it stressed that Mexico occupies the sixth world place of diabetes patients, with at least 10 million, in a ranking that headsChina, followed by India.

"This figure is alarming because the demographic difference between these countries is very large and occupy this site in the world ranking is worrying," said the specialist.

He clarified that the most frequent is type two diabetes mellitus and it is a multifactorial disease, that is, they influence various physiological and genetic factors for it to develop.

"These are certain genes that talk about a disposition for a person to suffer from this pandemic, in this case we as Latinos are located within an ethnic risk group and this genetic part is not possible to modify it," he explained.

Sánchez explained that the main trigger are environmental agents, of these the most important is obesity and "unfortunately this is an issue of great relevance in our country."

In this regard, he commented that Mexico occupies the second place of adults with obesity and the first in the case of overweight children, so these factors "both genetic and environmental causes a greater number of patients with diabetes"

"Although today efforts are being made to counteract it through the development of treatment and attention innovations, it is a priority to make efforts for Mexican citizenship to modify their food," he said.

He assured that most of the products that are offered in countries such as Mexico have a high sugar content, which added to a growing sedentary lifestyle, led to the disease to continue detonating itself.

So starting with an education to the population, plus a training in medical services would help to grant timely diagnosis and correct attention, considered the specialist of the General Hospital of Mexico.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) during 2011 only in Mexico, 70 out of every 100,000 people died from diabetes mellitus.

"Therefore, the importance of modifying the environment in order to change food and that suggests that there is a lower intake of products that have a high sugar content and encourage the increase in the physical activities of the population," he said.

Diabetes mellitus or diabetes, is a chronic degenerative disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce insulin, or that which occurs is not used efficiently by the organism.

This is the hormone responsible for the glucose of food being absorbed by cells and providing energy to the body.

At the meeting held in Vienna, the firm Novo Nordisk announced that its new ultra long duration medication for the treatment of children with diabetes showed effective results in its test starting one young one.

If this new treatment is approved, there is a better option for children and adolescents, since it is a long -term ultra basal insulin with an effectiveness of 42 hours, which translates into a medication that can grant a better quality oflife.
