The risk of developing type 2 diabetes is conditioned by the blood group. This is shown by a study developed by researchers from the National Institute of Medical Health and Research in France (INSERM) and published in the Diabetologia magazine, in which there is a higher risk in those people with group B and Factor Rh Positive + –ESSay, b+.

On the contrary, as explained by Dr. Guy Fagherazzi, director of the research, “our findings suggest that the population with the group or has the least risk of presentation of type 2 diabetes. And in this context, more clinical and epidemiological trials must be required, as well as new pathophysiological research, to find out why this population has a less likely to develop this disease. ”

O-, lower risk

To carry out the study, the researchers evaluated the data collected between 1990 and 2008 of 82,104 women with the aim of determining the relationship between type 2 diabetes and the blood group - this is, of groups A, B, B, B, B, B,AB and O and its combination with the Rhesus factor (RH), positive or negative.

The results showed that, compared to those with the group or, the people with group A, the AB Group and Group B present, respectively, a 10% risk, 17% and 35% higher to develop the disease.

Also, and although the Rhesus factor does not have any influence on the probability of presentation of type 2 diabetes, its combination with the ABO group does determine the risk of disease.Specifically, and in front of those with a blood group O-, those with groups B+, AB+ and A-, respectively, a 35% risk, 26% and 22% higher.

The reason explained by the relationship between blood group and type 2 diabetes remains unknown, although the authors suggest that, on the one hand, the human locus could influence endothelial markers or inflammation and, on the other, on the other,That the ABO group is a factor that determines the global composition of the intestinal microbiota - which in turn affects metabolism and, therefore, the risk of diabetes.
