The high prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), as well as its complications, implies the need to have better control over the management of this type of patients.In this way, the "Challenges of the DM2 patient in external consultation: practical management" is born, whose main objective is to improve and facilitate the integral management of the diabetic patient and update the therapeutic approach of the disease according to the different patient profiles.The project is carried out with the impulse of the Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly Alliance in Diabetes and has the collaboration of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI).
"This course aims to update the knowledge and improve the skills of the internist doctor in a scenario that is very frequent in our clinical practice," explains the head of Internal Medicine Service of the Regional University Hospital of Malaga and vice president of theSEMI, Ricardo Gómez strikes."The proper management of diabetes in internal medicine represents an important challenge, given the clinical complexity of patients treated in the consultations, which are characterized by advanced age, multicomorbility and polyimdication."In this sense, the expert points out that it would be interesting to carry out specific studies that analyze the characteristics of the diabetic population attended in internal medicine consultations.
Gómez strikes points out that, often, diabetes does not represent the direct cause of consultation, but a pathology that accompanies the main process.In addition, aspects such as therapeutic conciliation, adherence to treatment, therapeutic inertia and the promotion of healthy lifestyles are crucial in this scenario."Having an updated knowledge of the options available regarding anti -hebetic therapy and great agility in decision making, given the low time available, is fundamental in the treatment of patients with this type of diabetes in internal medicine,"The expert points out.
600 internists from all over Spain
With this project, it is planned to reach about 600 internists from all over Spain, which will be carried out in two phases: the first one has already trained 40 specialists in internal medicine in a day during which, the best has been discussed and analyzedTherapeutic approach to a "complex patient" with type 2 diabetes, through the study of different frequent and complex clinical scenarios.
The conclusions extracted from these days have served to create a document that will integrate the scientific content of the course with which other specialists in the area of internal medicine will be trained.It will be in a local meetings program, which have started this May.
